Chapter Five

The door clicks into place behind me as I enter the Black Fan for the fourth night in a row. I should really ask Catherine if she wants me to use a different entrance, but I've barely seen her since she showed me to my room.

A small part of me feels guilty about the hospitality I'm taking from her, especially when she isn't asking for payment. But I don't have any choice. I've been searching all over the city for somewhere I can rent for a few weeks, but have come up short. Most of the places I've found require six months rent up front, I suppose in case I go missing. They can't get rid of belongings within a certain timeframe, but they also won't want to be without income for that time.

It may make sense to me, but it's causing a lot of problems for me. Especially as Reese is now refusing to even let me into her mansion. I suppose it makes sense given our last interaction with one another, but it doesn't stop the fact my sister doesn't even want to see me from hurting. It's a potentially illogical feeling when she's been the one who put the wall up between us, but there doesn't seem to be any avoiding it, even if I want there to be.

"Ah, Sonia, I wondered who it was," Catherine says, stepping out from the back room.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to take you away from what you were doing." I hope she doesn't think I'm being ungrateful.

She flashes me a reassuring smile. "It's not a problem, I was actually just organising some tea for myself. Would you like to join me?"

"If you don't mind."

"I wouldn't offer if I did," she points out. "I've spent too much of my life pandering to the will of others. I don't do it anymore."

I raise an eyebrow, surprised to hear her say that. Though none of what I've witnessed suggests she sees clients herself. If what she's saying is true, then perhaps that's a part of the past for her.

I follow her into the backroom. It's decked out in a similar style to reception, with small tables and comfortable chairs. I'm assuming this is somewhere they entertain guests while they wait for other services, but I'm not brave enough to ask.

"Have a seat, I'll go and get the tea," she tells me, disappearing through another door.

This place is a warren of different rooms and areas. I'm not sure I'd ever be able to memorise them all and am a little in awe of the ease with which everyone seems to navigate them.

Catherine bustles back into the room with a laden tray and sets it down on the table between us. She makes herself comfortable in the other chair and starts unloading with practiced ease.

"How are you finding the city?" she asks.

I grimace, a little more at ease showing her my true feelings than I should be. "It's...something."

She lets out a light laugh, her whole face lighting up.
